Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cream of tartar ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup shortening, softened ½ butter, softened ½ cup granulated sugar ½ cup packed brown sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup granulated sugar for topping
1.Preheat oven to 350F 2.Combine flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; set aside. 3.Beat shortening, butter and sugars until light and fluffy. 4.Beat in egg and vanilla. 5.Place additional ½ cup sugar in a small bowl; fill a second small bowl with cool water. 6.Roll teaspoons of dough into 1-inch balls. Dip tops of balls first into water, then into sugar. 7.Arrange sugared side up and 1 inch apart on baking sheet. 8.Use the bottom of a glass or a decorative cookie stamp to flatten balls to about 3/8-inch thinkness. 9.Bake 8 to 11 minutes, or until golden. 10.Cool on racks.
