This recipe was from when I lived in New Orleans longer ago than I care to think about. A nice, fun variation on French toast!
1 cup milk 2 large eggs, well beaten ¼ cup sugar ¼ teaspoon vanilla 4 slices (about 1¼” thick) stale French bread 2 Tablespoons butter 2 Tablespoons oil ½ teaspoon cinnamon mixed with 2 teaspoons powdered sugar
In a large bowl combine the milk, eggs, sugar and vanilla and mix thoroughly. Soak the bread in this mixture for a few minutes. Melt the butter in a heavy skillet and add the oil. When the butter/oil mixture is hot, fry the soaked bread slices 1 or 2 at a time until golden brown on each side. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar just before serving.
